How we made the movie

The film crew

The Parallel was created for young people, by young people. We thought about that when making the film, so we consulted young people about it.

We asked them what it’s like to be a client of the centre, what sort of things encouraged them to use The Parallel instead of GPs or hospital services, etc.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t use the young people themselves to be in the film because it would breach NHS confidentiality rules. So we asked Simon Sullivan, education outreach worker at The Phoenix Arts Centre, to find some willing young people with some acting experience.

Even though it is a very short film it still needed a lot of planning and preparation. Luckily, we could call on our top film crew to help us produce the film, including BAFTA award-winning director, Mike Cockayne.

We would like to thank Simon Sullivan, The Phoenix, and all the young people and Parallel staff who appeared in the film, as well as Shaun Wright who took the still photos, and producer Julie Lau.

Have a look at the photos to see what it was like making the film.
